Do you think you are prepared, in case your faucet or shower doesn’t pour water anymore due to the bad weather, or insurgencies in the area or some fortuitous event. Are you prepared for an emergency?

Some things in life are not necessary. We can survive with little amounts of food but not without air and water – the basics of every one’s existence. Do you think that we would exist if we did not have water, or, any living and growing thing for that matter if we did not have water? It is not even possible. A planet without any signs of life or any existence at all is what happens if there is no water.

Our oceans have the largest percentage of water content in the planet, at 98%.Only two percent of the water is fresh water with 1.6% captured in polar ice caps and glaciers. Our bodies even have water. It ranges from 50% to 70% of the total body weight for an adult.

Water intake is necessary for our physical condition and healthy disposition. Water assists in the disposal of body wastes and toxins, regulation of body heat, and that biological functions are acted out. It is recommended that we drink daily at least six to eight medium glasses of good quality water because what we drink the day before were already secreted in the form of urine, water vapor from the lungs, and sweat. The good old water is irreplaceable.

Not drinking enough water can cause dehydration manifesting as symptoms of headaches, tiredness and loss of concentration. If your body is constantly dehydrated, eventually you’ll get constipation and stones on your kidneys.

Learning about the significance of water storage in the house in anticipation of a natural calamity should compel you to store up. Have a water storage container that can fit in your bathtub or bathroom and can keep 65 gallons of water at the most. If you use the plastic containers that used to store juices, water and other liquids, these might infect your water storage with bacteria so a new container is more hygienic to use and an even bigger one is better. Safeguard your health by utilizing the proper materials and supplies for your water storage that are safe and secured.

Initially, water is interrupted or contaminated when a natural calamity occurs.Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms (we have experienced many of these), and other emergencies could cut off your water supply.

To begin with, evaluate the risks and set up a plan of action for every risk and have alternatives. Having a contingency plan is better than not having at all. Because when worse comes to worst, at least not everything will be lost.Have a storage container on hand, prepare for six gallons per person per week.Store at least one week’s worth of water for each person in the family.

Remember these water purification guidelines, you might need it someday. Pour contaminated water through sheets of paper towels or multiple layers of clean towels or coffee filters if you have those. This way, you remove all the debris and dirt from the water. Boil the filtered for ten minutes. After the water has cooled down, mix in your water purification tablet or an iodine-bleach mixture with 3:2 drops ratio for every liter of water. Always be prepared. In anticipation of a natural disaster that may come your way, make sure that you have stored enough amount of water for your supply.

During an emergency it is of the utmost importance to get good water for various purposes such as drinking, making food and for maintaining hygiene. For this purpose, it is advisable to store a three day stock of water at any given time.

This kind of water can be stored in containers of metal, glass, plastic, or fiberglass. Be careful that you dont use containers containing bleach or any other toxics. Soft drink bottles are quite suitable for storing emergency drinking water. However, after filling them, they must be sealed well and kept in a cool and dark place. After six months these should be rotated and a fresh stock should be placed as water too has a shelf life.

If, due to some reason, you dont have ready water during a crisis you can use other sources but you need to purify it. Water from rain, streams, ponds, or lakes can be purified by methods of boiling, distillation and disinfecting. Distillation can kill microorganisms that escape during the boiling process. It also helps to separate unwanted salts, metallic content, and other chemicals. When you boil water be sure to boil it for about five minutes and the water will give a better taste by pouring it several times in between containers as it gets the oxygen back.

You can also use bleach to kill the germs. Regular household bleach that contains only five percent of sodium hypochlorite can be used for this purpose. A few drops can be added to a gallon of water and let it remain for about half an hour. If the odor is not strong enough, you can add a few more drops.

Distillation is a very good method of purifying water. Here the water is boiled and the vapor is collected. This vapor undergoes condensation and gets converted into water which can be used as it is pure. While evaporating, only the pure water becomes vapor whereas salts and other chemicals cannot evaporate and hence will stay behind. You can fill a pot about half its volume with the impure water. To its lid attach a cup with a handle and dip it inside the vessel without touching the water. Upon evaporating, the vapor condenses and collects in the cup. Distillation removes germs that escape the process of boiling and disinfecting.

There are calamities which cannot be detected early enough to prevent their effects. Like for example an earthquake, this natural occurring catastrophe which could cause millions of dollars in damages, cannot be accurately predicted. They occur without warning. There are also calamities which can be detected. For example, typhoons, floods, and blizzards. They can be predicted and estimated, but the aftermath can not be. For these reasons, it is imperative to keep the things that we need to survive when such disasters occur.

These things that we need that we must keep in preparation for disasters must last for at least three days or a week. They must also be kept in a safe place. You must include necessities such as, food, water, clothes and other important things that will help people survive when unfortunate circumstances happen.

For these reasons, there are storage devices and equipment available for storing necessities especially food and water. Emergency water storage and emergency food storage are a great help in unexpected catastrophes ensuring that you don’t starve or thirst to death.

The emergency water storage can hold enough clean and safe water until rescue comes or until the disaster ends. It will help keep the water you stored clean and unpolluted. On the other hand, emergency food storage can keep an ample amount of food for survival. Just like water, food is essential to survive and must also be kept fresh and safe and most of all clean.

Emergency food storage is good equipment for storing substantial amount of food. This is also important if you want to last for days if ever you get trapped in your home or basement. Remember however, to store only non-perishable foods. Do not store meat or vegetable and other foods that will easily be destroyed in a short period of time.

When you are going to keep or store food in the emergency food storage, it is important that you will have to consider what foods that you will have to store there. It is advisable to store foods that will not expire or will not rot if not in use. You can store canned foods such as sardines, corn beef, spam and other canned goods that will last a long time. Remember to check its expiration date to prevent any further unwanted incidents such as food poisoning.

Having an emergency water storage and emergency food storage will be a great benefit for you and your family. You will never know when a catastrophe will strike and it always a good thing to be prepared for your family so that you survive longer until help arrives.
